Hey everyone, a little more news about the anniversary festivities in February. We're calling it READ PICTURES OF YOU DAY, and as you can guess, we're encouraging everyone to read Pictures of You! Why? Good question.
It's a flaw in the machine of webcomics that they're most often read just a page at a time. It's how we avoid weeks or months between updates, but Pictures of You was always intended to be read not just by page, but by chapter and by book. Breaking them up into page-by-page updates has been hard. While I strive to make every page readable on its own, I feel that the strength of the storytelling is when it's read in larger segments.
So, in that spirit, if you've never had the chance to sit down and read the comic more than a page at a time, I'm inviting you to spare some time on Friday, February 4th and read Pictures of You.
Gaaah!
Alexander gives me the creeps. He reminds me too much of a girlfriend of one of my ex-friends- Yeah, she totally messed up that friendship, and was a creepy one! *shudder*
I agree. While some webcomics do a good job of making each page stand on it's own (especially the ones without continuity), it's still fundamentally flawed storytelling.
To be fair, Alexander doesn't exactly *know* patricks friends as anyone other than "the guy who flirts with girls all the time" and "the guy who hits people occasionally". Given his English isn't the best he might just figure they are none of his buisness and he's none of theirs.
Lol I love going back to read over bits. Every now and then I go back about 20 pages just to feel the flow properly. it's how this stuff should be read.
... I'm not sure I understand their problem with Alexander. Yes, he's inattentive to things around him, and yes, he influences Patrick to do things he wouldn't normally do. But neither of those things are necessarily negative. They have potential to be sure.
Truth be told though, some people are just like that. They don't look other people in the eyes and they come off apathetic when really they just live inside their heads and have poor social skills.
Not every boyfriend or girlfriends my friends have had have cared at all about their friends. My best friend has had long term boyfriends that I met as many times as I have fingers. They just weren't interested in being friends with her friends. But I never mad a big deal out of it. It didn't mean I couldn't be friends with her. Plus if I'd made a stink she would have stayed with them longer.
As for influencing Patrick, what significant other hasn't made us want to do things like change our hair, listen to music we normally wouldn't like, watch movies we would not have normally given a chance, wear clothes we might not have looked at before? They act like Patrick was converted to Christianity at Alex's bidding.
I just feel like their overreacting.
Of course, Patrick is way overreacting about Kara, especially since it'll be hard for her to hurt Peter when they're keeping it so casual for the time being...
Maybe Peter and Andy need to do something that most people have a hard time doing: Consider maybe their best friend is the problem, not the people around him.
Yes, Alexander is an ass. However, Patrick is just as much of an ass for choosing to stay with Alexander. I've been in Patrick's position so I know from experience that he fully realizes how fucked up their relationship is and he's just allowing fear and complacency to control him.
The Great Unknown
I am not sure about giving the benefit of the doubt to Alexander (who's had more than his share of opportunities to engage with the group but deliberately has chosen not to for reasons currently unknown to us). At the same time, we're subconsciously encouraged to secretly hate on Kara for some past undisclosed issue of which we know very little (only that she allegedly broke Andy's heart).
We know equally little about Alexander's motivations. To be honest, I'm not sure if what his issue is. Could he be a gay male antisocial clone of Kara? Could Kara have turned over a new leaf for Slugger? What about Michelle?
I've got tons of questions and waiting to have the answers slowly unfold unbelievably small bits at a time is excruciating. Sometimes, I will go for a few days at a time without checking for updates. Then I get excited when I get to read 3 pages in one sitting!
I probably got spoiled by spending many hours reading through the first couple books cover-to-cover :)
Yes
Yes, I would like some print copy, too, to linger over rather than trying to page back on my old mac while trying to remember when slugger was warned about Kara.
I am also withholding judgement on Alexander for now, though we know everything goes south at some point and he may be part of it.
@ :D
That's hardly the politest form of contact though is it? If someone said that to me I'd probably ignore them as well.
Look ... I KNOW this is all gonna fall down and it'll probably turn out that Alexander is a massive tool whose using Patrick etc. etc. etc. But right here, and right now. I still like him.
