I won't lie, I was tempted to do an April Fool's prank, but then I read everyone's comments and I got scared you'd all come and get me.

See you Monday!

This is a really important moment for Melanie... Maybe an alternate final panel to freak people out xP

Madock345, April 1st, 2011, 12:35 am

*I* would have come to get you. nothing serious of course... I think this proves that the dad had no idea, my thoughts on that being that they couldn't tell him because he would call the cops and then Peter would go to jail too.

Maritza (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 12:37 am

Tell your Dad, Mel. Tell him your douche-ass boyfriend beat the crap outta you.

Why the Hell not???

blitz (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 12:42 am

Dad and Devon are just clueless aren't they?

reverendjack, April 1st, 2011, 12:45 am

you're totally going to do a spin-off yaoi comic starring Devon and the father, aren't you...

comicgirl, April 1st, 2011, 12:47 am

I hope you guys are right...
And that Mel's father has no idea what Devon did. Because... seriously?

Did he seriously just ask her why she's so scared? Seriously??

Of course, now I gotta wonder why they didn't. He does care in his own twisted way. Surely, he'd want to protect his daughter... But ooh, now she's set the stage to mention Andy. *sigh* Monday is so far away.

P.S. thank you for not doing an April Fools prank. I'd have had to hunt you down. *nods*

miguelito3dp, April 1st, 2011, 12:49 am

That was not the correct answer melanie.....It is not important if you're already with someone else...what's important is that this guy is a piece of shit and he doesn't deserve even the chance to be near you. That's what daddy has to accept. Just talking to that guy is "doing something wrong"...

Indigo (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 12:51 am

Her father is a moron.

"Why are you so scared?"

What kind of father sees his daughter become *terrified* and doesn't realize something must be wrong for her to react that way to the boyfriend Dear old Dad approves of? How can he be so blind?!

I hope Patrick comes in to back Melanie up before her confession she's with Andy causes Devon to go ballistic in front of the parents, no matter how idiotic the dad is.

London-Smyth, April 1st, 2011, 1:07 am

I gotta say I wish Melanie would grow a spine and just tell her father the asshole beat her. Though, I get the feeling when Patrick finds out Devon's there, his dad will hear about it.

Butterfingers (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 1:12 am

And again
I reiterate: Man, fuck that.

Ren (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 1:33 am

ARE you kidding?!

But No... I would never hurt Mr. Twist for stirring drama. If I'd know better, he's already getting a kick out of watching us speculate and trying to predict his drama plans.

But yes, I agree it is outrageous. How can wife-beatin-ex, not take a hint that after the last beating, she never wants anything to do with him?

Did Peter really, -really- beat him back that hard in the head that he has a gap in his memory that involves the part of... oh I don't know... TO NEVER COME NEAR HER AGAIN?!

King Anasazi, April 1st, 2011, 2:08 am

Miguelito3dp's absolutely right : it doesn't matter that she's with someone else. What does matter is that she's being treated like she can't handle making the choice of who she loves by her father and she's been beaten by creepdevon... She has a right not to forgive.

A man that treats a woman that way doesn't love her. A father that treats his daughter that way doesn't love her.

I can't wait to see Patrick's reaction to this. Will at least one of the kids grow some spine and tell daddy off ?

alauraborealis, April 1st, 2011, 2:22 am

Yeah, this is the part where he snaps and smacks the shit out of her in front of everyone. Not the most pleasant outcome, but the most realistic for an abusive piece of shit like Devon.

The_Hankerchief, April 1st, 2011, 3:37 am

For those who came late to the plot, here's a brief summary, as told by Christmas Music:

"Oh, Slugger left Devon a-crying,
and said "Next time, you will be dying,
Next time your face around Mel shows",
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

When the kids show up on Christmas night,
Dad invites Mel's old ex, who is scorned,
"Though abused you a bit, I might,
Our relationship isn't all torn"

At dinnertime, Mel's a-shocking,
Dad and Devon for she's a-talking,
About the guy that she does now blow,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!"

I hope Devon gets his ass kicked. That way, I can tack on a few more verses!

ACiDNiNE (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 5:12 am

Mr. Twist, you are very correct.

I personally cannot speak for any of your other readers, but if you had screwed with us on today of all days... lets just say it would not have been pleasant!

All joking aside, long time reader, second time poster, and curious as to what i would have to do to force you into updating 7 days a week... these days off are KILLING me!

NicoleW (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 5:27 am

Dammit, Melanie -- tell your father what Devon did to you. He doesn't know, does he? I'd like to think that even Patrick's dad wouldn't try to force Melanie to take back an abusive asshole.

Susanowo (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 6:27 am

new reader
Hey,k found this comic earlier this week, and just got done archive binging (actually, I got done right before this update, which was a hell of a cliff hanger :P)
Love the comic. Very real characters, and there is usually no one right side, which is hard to do.

I hope they do tell her father what Devon did to her. he may not call the police if he knows it will send his daughter's avenger to jail.

Though it has been implied that they aren't the greatest parents, if not the greatest people, so we'll see how it all pans out, I guess >,<

Skylan2021 (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 6:36 am

Thats right Mel, the big strong authoritative men dont want you to make any bad decisions with your weak and stupid womanly brain /sarcasm. Is anyone else...scared at how Mels dad and Devon have the same mindset. That is something to be feared.

amiko_16, April 1st, 2011, 7:26 am

There would have been a beat-down over the internet, yes XD;;

Urge to strangle father still...rising...
Even if he doesn't know the truth behind the breakup, this whole "Let me step in and correct my silly daughter's mistake" thing and his failure to react to her fear is driving me nuts.

Spar (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 7:54 am

Kind of hoping Patrick goes buck wild and delivers the beatdown on Devon himself. Gotta agree that the dad made a dick move, compounded by not alerting when Melanie was very obviously scared. Clueless indeed, or as has been alluded to, maybe he doesn't see what Devon is because they're two of a kind, at least in mindset.

Los (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 8:06 am

I hope on everything that Patrick's non-stop shit-spewing mouth finally does something useful within the next 3 comics. Seriously.

KiggenGrimmace, April 1st, 2011, 8:09 am

Devon: "Melanie, we can work this out."
- Yeah, by you going away - far, far away! -
Dad: "We just don't want you to make a mistake."
- Mel's not making any mistake. You, however, well... *groan*

GT, I thank you, just like the others, that you did Not pull an April fool's joke.
Also, I continue to be enthralled by both your storyline, and by your artwork. Panel Six, you can see her anguish - just by that little line on her forehead. Even in the midst of this very serious and potentially tragic plot development, I can smile because the story is one more step further along.
Have a wonderful weekend! - even though mine will be spent "on the edge of my seat" waiting (patiently!) for the next page!

xkrazydog, April 1st, 2011, 8:52 am

Omg. MelaniexAndy senses tingling fff-.
Patrick wtf you doing? Hurry up and tell him how much of an abusive dick Devon is!

jeffko (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 9:00 am

Not the ideal reaction Mel could've had, but not entirely unexpected. She's basically in a house with three men who have a huge impact in her life, yet question her judgment (Patrick being the third, but we haven't seen his reaction yet and he will most likely support her in this). This is purely a defensive stance. IMO, she blurted out what she believes will get Devon off her back as quickly and expeditiously as possible: "I'm with someone else, so fuck off." Mel is slowly finding her own confidence, but she's not quite there yet and still vulnerable.

Her dad's reaction is infuriating, as he's obviously on Devon's side here, but I wonder how much Mel told him about what he did to her. In "Bruises, part 6", she tells her dad that Devon hurt her, but "hurt" is a very broad word that may mean several things. Had she said: "Devon is a monster who regularly slapped me around and just recently beat me senseless" during that phone conversation, I'm sure this current situation would've been different. At least, that's what I would hope, because if it weren't, then her dad would be just as sick as Devon, and perhaps even moreso, as this is his own flesh and blood we're talking about.

In essence, I think her dad wants his daughter to be taken care of and feels that Devon is the man for the job. Perhaps the douchebag reminds him of himself. I have no doubt that Devon can smooth talk his way out of lots of things.

Sad thing is, had Mel blurted out that Devon beat her, I think her father would still have chalked it up to hysterics and simply told her to stop saying crazy things and calm down.

Oh, Mel... why must all the men in your life be such assholes (well, except Andy)?

Already looking forward to Monday!

Skylan2021 (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 11:20 am

Second post, but I had to ask...does anybody else think that Peter's fist is just restless right now wherever he is. He's gotta have some sorta 6th sense that says "someone's ass needs to be kicked." Devon broke the pact, he must be punished!

TCGC (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 11:39 am

Mel should describe the beating she got in great detail, and pepper in some lies in order to make Devon look reeeeaaaaally bad.

Then Patrick should come in with an M60, spout a deadpan catchphrase, and then do a tactical room sweep.

Nina Anima (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 12:26 pm

First thought: Go Patrick, back up your sister!

Second thought: Ohhh shit, if he does, Devon will tell his father that he's gay.

This has the potential to be really, really ugly.

ceeber (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 1:39 pm

I think, for the first time, Patrick may see some value to his sister dating Andy. Yes, it would have been far far better if she had just told her father that Devon beat her. It would have been better if she had just stood up to Devon and told him she would never go back to a man that beat her. But there's the possibility that, with less confidence, and with the additional pressure of her Dad, that she could be bullied back into doing as her father insisted. If he doesn't get it now, maybe he simply doesn't want to believe it. Maybe, as others have suggested, he wouldn't believe her now if she said it. Instead, Andy is a buffer boyfriend. To a territorial, abusive man, it's never "over" until someone else has slept with his territory. That's horribly objectifying, but it's the way a guy like Devon, an abuser, sees it. His goal is to own her, and from his perspective, someone else owns her now. He may hit her now, he may take revenge by outing her brother, but he probably won't try to get her back again. So at least there's that. If Patrick has any decency at all, at least he'll be relieved for his sister about that.

Vicki (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 1:48 pm

should have seen it coming
This is exactly what Mel would have done. I don't know why I didn'see that.

susanowo (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 2:08 pm

Further Thoughts
Just wanted to point out that its not necessary to lie to make Devon look reaaal bad. he's already a worthless POS, and just telling someone what had happened should be ebnough for them to come to a similar conclusion. Lies weaken your case by potentially unraveling, causing the truth to look suspect, or by potentially making the claim seem too outlandish to be true.

Though A bullet through Devon's head would be satisfying--though traumatizing to all involved ; ;

Finally I would agree that Patrick is starting to descend into "Jesus, just quit our bitching! territory," but I have faith that he will pull his head out eventually--he is used to feeling powerless, but hopefully he can get over his issues and stand up for his sister

Indigo (Guest), April 1st, 2011, 9:14 pm

I still am wishing, even on an hours-later reread that Melanie would just hike up her ovaries and say she's leaving if her father won't make Devon leave.

I agree she's starting to get confidence back, but Devon had her in a pattern of meekly acquiescing to his wishes or getting beaten for it -- so I think the blurting out of "there's someone else" is understandable, if not the preferable answer.

But I hope and Pray that Devon beating her comes to light in next week's comics.

Falconer, April 2nd, 2011, 1:05 am

I would think that with how upset she is her dad would figure out that there is obviously SOMETHING VERY WRONG going on here. >:| Damn that boy for making her father so dense! And now begins the drama...

cahoots (Guest), April 2nd, 2011, 3:54 pm

@Nina Anima
Yeah... I was kinda thinking that as well. I don't see how Patrick's secret is going to make it through this still a secret unless he just kind of stays in the corner like a useless douchebag. Despite his recent whiny bitch-ass tendencies, this does not seem like what he would do.

Coffins_for_Kids, April 2nd, 2011, 5:16 pm

First off I just want to say that I'm new here, just caught up today and I have to say I love love love LOVE this comic. The art, the story, the script, the CHARACTERS. Its all genius. And the best part is that its all believable. Its not hyped up or over dramatic. Its all real life situations and people and I love it. I'm definitely going to be posting here more often.

Vaya (Guest), April 3rd, 2011, 1:26 pm

I find that I'm actually dreading the coming updates, but of course I HAVE TO READ THEM. I've read through most of the commentaries to this page, and find that I agree with most. Of course what matters is that Devon is a psycopath (or a sociopath, I'm not sure which) who manipulated and beat the crap out of her, but as others already have pointed out, in a state of panic Melanie grasps at whatever straws she can find to get him away, and make her father see that he can't force Devon on her. I also find myself wishing that Andy and the others had taken some pictures of Mel right after her beating as proof - that might change the way daddy dearest sees Devon. A second possibility, as others too have pointed out, is of course that Devon won't be able to control himsel, not even in front of Mels father, and hit for telling him that she's seeing someone else. Oh, the wait for tomorrow...
