*I* would have come to get you. nothing serious of course... I think this proves that the dad had no idea, my thoughts on that being that they couldn't tell him because he would call the cops and then Peter would go to jail too.
I hope you guys are right...
And that Mel's father has no idea what Devon did. Because... seriously?
Did he seriously just ask her why she's so scared? Seriously??
Of course, now I gotta wonder why they didn't. He does care in his own twisted way. Surely, he'd want to protect his daughter... But ooh, now she's set the stage to mention Andy. *sigh* Monday is so far away.
P.S. thank you for not doing an April Fools prank. I'd have had to hunt you down. *nods*
That was not the correct answer melanie.....It is not important if you're already with someone else...what's important is that this guy is a piece of shit and he doesn't deserve even the chance to be near you. That's what daddy has to accept. Just talking to that guy is "doing something wrong"...
Miguelito3dp's absolutely right : it doesn't matter that she's with someone else. What does matter is that she's being treated like she can't handle making the choice of who she loves by her father and she's been beaten by creepdevon... She has a right not to forgive.
A man that treats a woman that way doesn't love her. A father that treats his daughter that way doesn't love her.
I can't wait to see Patrick's reaction to this. Will at least one of the kids grow some spine and tell daddy off ?
Hey,k found this comic earlier this week, and just got done archive binging (actually, I got done right before this update, which was a hell of a cliff hanger :P)
Love the comic. Very real characters, and there is usually no one right side, which is hard to do.
I hope they do tell her father what Devon did to her. he may not call the police if he knows it will send his daughter's avenger to jail.
Though it has been implied that they aren't the greatest parents, if not the greatest people, so we'll see how it all pans out, I guess >,<
Thats right Mel, the big strong authoritative men dont want you to make any bad decisions with your weak and stupid womanly brain /sarcasm. Is anyone else...scared at how Mels dad and Devon have the same mindset. That is something to be feared.
There would have been a beat-down over the internet, yes XD;;
Urge to strangle father still...rising...
Even if he doesn't know the truth behind the breakup, this whole "Let me step in and correct my silly daughter's mistake" thing and his failure to react to her fear is driving me nuts.
Kind of hoping Patrick goes buck wild and delivers the beatdown on Devon himself. Gotta agree that the dad made a dick move, compounded by not alerting when Melanie was very obviously scared. Clueless indeed, or as has been alluded to, maybe he doesn't see what Devon is because they're two of a kind, at least in mindset.
Devon: "Melanie, we can work this out."
- Yeah, by you going away - far, far away! -
Dad: "We just don't want you to make a mistake."
- Mel's not making any mistake. You, however, well... *groan*
GT, I thank you, just like the others, that you did Not pull an April fool's joke.
Also, I continue to be enthralled by both your storyline, and by your artwork. Panel Six, you can see her anguish - just by that little line on her forehead. Even in the midst of this very serious and potentially tragic plot development, I can smile because the story is one more step further along.
Have a wonderful weekend! - even though mine will be spent "on the edge of my seat" waiting (patiently!) for the next page!
Not the ideal reaction Mel could've had, but not entirely unexpected. She's basically in a house with three men who have a huge impact in her life, yet question her judgment (Patrick being the third, but we haven't seen his reaction yet and he will most likely support her in this). This is purely a defensive stance. IMO, she blurted out what she believes will get Devon off her back as quickly and expeditiously as possible: "I'm with someone else, so fuck off." Mel is slowly finding her own confidence, but she's not quite there yet and still vulnerable.
Her dad's reaction is infuriating, as he's obviously on Devon's side here, but I wonder how much Mel told him about what he did to her. In "Bruises, part 6", she tells her dad that Devon hurt her, but "hurt" is a very broad word that may mean several things. Had she said: "Devon is a monster who regularly slapped me around and just recently beat me senseless" during that phone conversation, I'm sure this current situation would've been different. At least, that's what I would hope, because if it weren't, then her dad would be just as sick as Devon, and perhaps even moreso, as this is his own flesh and blood we're talking about.
In essence, I think her dad wants his daughter to be taken care of and feels that Devon is the man for the job. Perhaps the douchebag reminds him of himself. I have no doubt that Devon can smooth talk his way out of lots of things.
Sad thing is, had Mel blurted out that Devon beat her, I think her father would still have chalked it up to hysterics and simply told her to stop saying crazy things and calm down.
Oh, Mel... why must all the men in your life be such assholes (well, except Andy)?
Second post, but I had to ask...does anybody else think that Peter's fist is just restless right now wherever he is. He's gotta have some sorta 6th sense that says "someone's ass needs to be kicked." Devon broke the pact, he must be punished!
I think, for the first time, Patrick may see some value to his sister dating Andy. Yes, it would have been far far better if she had just told her father that Devon beat her. It would have been better if she had just stood up to Devon and told him she would never go back to a man that beat her. But there's the possibility that, with less confidence, and with the additional pressure of her Dad, that she could be bullied back into doing as her father insisted. If he doesn't get it now, maybe he simply doesn't want to believe it. Maybe, as others have suggested, he wouldn't believe her now if she said it. Instead, Andy is a buffer boyfriend. To a territorial, abusive man, it's never "over" until someone else has slept with his territory. That's horribly objectifying, but it's the way a guy like Devon, an abuser, sees it. His goal is to own her, and from his perspective, someone else owns her now. He may hit her now, he may take revenge by outing her brother, but he probably won't try to get her back again. So at least there's that. If Patrick has any decency at all, at least he'll be relieved for his sister about that.
Just wanted to point out that its not necessary to lie to make Devon look reaaal bad. he's already a worthless POS, and just telling someone what had happened should be ebnough for them to come to a similar conclusion. Lies weaken your case by potentially unraveling, causing the truth to look suspect, or by potentially making the claim seem too outlandish to be true.
Though A bullet through Devon's head would be satisfying--though traumatizing to all involved ; ;
Finally I would agree that Patrick is starting to descend into "Jesus, just quit our bitching! territory," but I have faith that he will pull his head out eventually--he is used to feeling powerless, but hopefully he can get over his issues and stand up for his sister
I still am wishing, even on an hours-later reread that Melanie would just hike up her ovaries and say she's leaving if her father won't make Devon leave.
I agree she's starting to get confidence back, but Devon had her in a pattern of meekly acquiescing to his wishes or getting beaten for it -- so I think the blurting out of "there's someone else" is understandable, if not the preferable answer.
But I hope and Pray that Devon beating her comes to light in next week's comics.
I would think that with how upset she is her dad would figure out that there is obviously SOMETHING VERY WRONG going on here. >:| Damn that boy for making her father so dense! And now begins the drama...
Yeah... I was kinda thinking that as well. I don't see how Patrick's secret is going to make it through this still a secret unless he just kind of stays in the corner like a useless douchebag. Despite his recent whiny bitch-ass tendencies, this does not seem like what he would do.
First off I just want to say that I'm new here, just caught up today and I have to say I love love love LOVE this comic. The art, the story, the script, the CHARACTERS. Its all genius. And the best part is that its all believable. Its not hyped up or over dramatic. Its all real life situations and people and I love it. I'm definitely going to be posting here more often.
I find that I'm actually dreading the coming updates, but of course I HAVE TO READ THEM. I've read through most of the commentaries to this page, and find that I agree with most. Of course what matters is that Devon is a psycopath (or a sociopath, I'm not sure which) who manipulated and beat the crap out of her, but as others already have pointed out, in a state of panic Melanie grasps at whatever straws she can find to get him away, and make her father see that he can't force Devon on her. I also find myself wishing that Andy and the others had taken some pictures of Mel right after her beating as proof - that might change the way daddy dearest sees Devon. A second possibility, as others too have pointed out, is of course that Devon won't be able to control himsel, not even in front of Mels father, and hit for telling him that she's seeing someone else. Oh, the wait for tomorrow...
