Well, I don't know about any other Dads out there, but if I found out this info in this manner, I don't think I'd even let Devon speak - all I'd say is "I've got a shotgun, a shovel, and 40 acres out back... and you've got three seconds..."
Their dad seems to be surprisingly calm given the news, I mean the expression he gives in the panel where she tells him looks worried but damn...it feels like he surprisingly quick at allowing the subject to be changed.
Come on, your daughter just told you her boyfriend brutally beat her! Worry about your potential homophobia later!
I'm going to go ahead and guess that Mr. Hogan won't believe Devon, given the news he just got and chalks it up to Devon lashing out at Patrick. Or he'll believe him and Patrick will be kicked out on his own and since he's cut off from his money, his boyfriend's gonna dump him.
it would be just downright hilarious if patricks' dad just replied 'yeah, so? we've known that for a while now.' and devon just stands there completely befuddled before being physically tossed out of the house.
now I just want to see Mr. Hogan put the boots to mr. mcmaster
AND IT IS MORE EPIC THAN PATRICKS even though Pat got a single page of punch.
I can't be the only one who does kind of think it would be sort of a *good* thing for Patrick to have to fend for himself for a bit. He's been mooching around smoking and taking degree after degree on his dad's money... having to get a job won't hurt him, and might kick-start him into trying to save enough to actually finish a damn degree.
I would be nice to be able to say "with Alexander's support he could make it" but yeah, we all know that's not gonna happen.
This could go three ways: Mr. Hogan will cut ties with Patrick; he'll just ignore Devon and flat out kick his ass; or he'll have a major coronary from the massive dose of bad news dropped on him in a single sitting. Who knows?
Also, Mr. Twist, in my neck of the woods, it's 1am. You're right on schedule. haha
So Melanie confesses that Devon would beat her mercilessly, and Devon's response is that they've been "filling her head with lies about him?" Pretty flimsy defense, if you ask me. Her dad had better not believe him, or I swear I'll post impotent rants on that comic page.
Some beats up your daughter and all you can say is 'Why didn't you tell us'?
And then look concerned when there's a secret about your son?
Man, there should be a filler of some person just bursting through the wall and giving him the comic-equivalent of father of the year.
Daddy is pissing me off here.
If my father gave a damn about ANYTHING but ME after finding out I'd been abused, I doubt I'd ever trust him again.
I'm hoping Daddy responds with 'Shut the hell up and get the fuck out', at the *bare minimum*, and then focuses on Melanie and just leaves Patrick for later. What would be righteous is if the response he gives would be 'You think we care about THAT?' or even better 'Oh, you think we didn't know that already?'.
But Daddy has still pissed me off. I hope he's just reeling from the realization of what Devon did, but, well, I've known far too many fathers who would be more insulted about their son being gay than their daughter being abused.
We'll have to see where Daddy Dearest lands in that spectrum.
Oh, I can think of some...
"Congrats, son! I've been winning drag pageants for years!"
"Son, give your sister some ganja- she's had a hard day."
"Let's call the police (and send Peter to prison)!"
Or, to draw from Rori, "Dance Party!"
... So what? Dad is going to forget all about that first part and just freak out on Patrick and believe that they've been "filling Melanie's head with lies?" ... Man, family is so fucked up I can believe it if it does.
I knew their dad was a shitbag, but seriously? Why are we not deciding where to hide a body right now? I don't think I have EVER seen a dad fail this hard, even terrible dads flip their shit when you hurt their kids. I hope Melanie lays him out and her and Patrick leave together.
I think if devon had leaft out the part about mr Hogan paying for it all Patrick would have been fine, just shows how good he is at manipulating people...
Even so I'm hoping against hope that mr hogan will just ignore patricks secret and focus on his daughter
If Dad has any decency at all, he'll not even listen to a word Devon says. Knowing that a loved one (especially a daughter/son) is being physically abused *should* be enough to prompt the deepest layers of anger. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I'm surprised nobody else said it, but a tiny part of me was holding out hope that the announcement would be that PoY is going to 5 days a week in the near future. Like I said before, don't do it if it's going to cause any problems, but it would be awesome.
As for what happens next, it's kind of hard to tell. Gibson has already said that none of his characters are there just to hate on, even Devon. My guess is that Mr. Hogan is going to deal with Devon now, but Patrick is in for it after he's finished with the douchebag. But being forced to fend for himself might do Patrick some good even if he doesn't see it that way.
Oh, and I just realized that I think I've officially commented more on your comic than all other comics on the net combined. That just goes to show how good it is and how invested I've become in these characters.
I'm glad to see that Mr.Hogan at least wasn't aware of Melanie getting beat by Devon... he's at least a little more respectable now. -Although how he handles Patrick being outed will determine how decent of a father he will be.
Poor Patrick, though. It's bad enough to have been outed to his parents by someone else, let alone a waste of sperm like Devon. Here's hoping Peter keeps true to his word after everything that happens this night.
Right now, I'm most relieved for Melanie... had her parents known she'd been beaten but still wanted her to get back together with Devon... man, that would pretty much just destroy her whole world to know that the people who are supposed to love and care for her the most would be willing to send her back to a lowlife like Devon. So there's that bit of a silver lining to this mess.
Being a gay person who came out of the closet to a less than accepting mother (at the time...) if this is done realistically at all, their father will believe Devon, even if he tosses him out on his ass. Mostly cause he's probably suspected it. Now how he reacts is a different story. Sometimes people surprise you.
Also, say I'm a bitch but getting cut off will be good for Patrick. I assume this is where he gets a job at Santaria's, whatever that is, as described in the second chapter. I mean, why else would he get a job if Daddy wasn't cutting him off? And maybe this will be a chance to see that Alexander only cares about his money.
Also, since it was mentioned that if Patrick hadn't gotten a job there, things might have been different, I'm betting this is a pivotal point.
Devon's asshattery knows no bounds. He's been saving up that little bomb for a while, just waiting for a chance to use it. I can see their father reacting more to Patrick being outed than Mel being beaten, because he seems like just THAT kind of bigot. And I'm fairly certain Alexander will GTFO of there once Patrick has no more copious amounts of cash. Boyfriend is only interesting when he has net worth. I'm eagerly anticipating your news, Mr. Twist.
Well, based on what my family tried to do in somewhat similar circumstances, I'm surprised no one has brought up involuntary commitment for either or both of the sibs. Some parents decide what they want to know and how they want their kids to be and that's the way it's going to be, by golly. I do not see anything good happening in the next couple strips.
Damn You Gibson Twist!
Sometimes...when life is really hectic...I am able to avoid this strip for a week or two, allowing me to read six "days" all in one sitting. But, noooo, I have to be all caught up for this sequence. <sigh>
Well since I'm here, my prediction is that Dad will say, "Gay is fine, but no son of mine will have a FOREIGN boyfriend!" :-)
I've noticed that every time (especially so in this page's last panel) that Devon addresses the fact of Patrick's homosexuality or homosexuality in general his face adopts this absolutely hideous and trance-like state of fear and disgust. Like some kind of innate instinctive hatred is just boiling inside of him. His upbringing is most likely to blame for this ridiculous paranoia, but hats off to Mr. Gibson for conveying this character trait so well while never having to fully spell it out for the reader. Sad, though.
As for Mr. Hogan....
He obviously loves his daughter and as much as I don't think he's going to take this news about Patrick well or lightly, I don't think that it will blur his judgement about his daughter and Devon. It is entirely possible for him to hold utter disgust and distaste for both Devon and his son, despite his animosity towards Patrick being misguided.
I think some slack should be cut to their Dad until he actually does something horrible.
As others have pointed out, Patrick has been taking his financial situation for granted, and can be quite the sanctimonious prick, so I can see Dad being fed up with him given the perception that he just hauled off and punched Devon for no good reason, and he does seem genuinely concerned about what is happening. I would probably ask my own (non-existent) daughter the same question out of the sheer horror that someone had been doing that to her and I had been smiling and shaking their hand.
Of course Next I would have to be physically restrained or else a convenient alibi constructed, but I think Daddy's world is coming down so he's in a bit of shock. He's not getting nay stellar parent awards, but he's not reacting inappropriately...yet
(incidentally, I think we've all been primed to think of them as horrible parents if not horrible people through the chatter of the main characters, so I think its easy to jump on any perceived defect :P)
I have been coming back about once an hour checking for updates or if i missed anything. when i first read this page i was at my friend's apt and screamed so loud she had to read it, now she started from the beginning and is hooked. You have us Mr. Twist, I'm dying to know what happens next!
This is really late but it seriously makes me laugh still. "Her friends are filling her head with lies!" By my account it went something like this..."Devon beat me, oh my god it was so terrible (cries)". Then the reply by all of Mel's friends...."That guy is an asshole."........This kind of falsified slander cannot continue! Poor Devon! /sarcasm
