I always thought this sort of thing would come up when the person's ready. Losing close family's never easy, and who are we to begrutch 'em a little time to reflect? Frankly, it's not their place, even if it's Christo's girlfriend; he'd told her when he was ready.
By the way, I dig the Snoop Dogg reference. (Have you heard The Gourd's version? A bluegrass band singing dirty rap songs. Funniest thing you've seen in your life!)
To be fair, there's a few things I've not brought up with my partner. He helps with my kid, he knows some serious shit about me, and vice versa, but some things... It's like, you know they'd understand and accept and let you talk, but it's still hard to actually say it, and just knowing they'd listen is kind of enough. All the shit I have, I feel his support without him even knowing about it, so why hurt myself by forcing the words out? Won't change anything.
That is pretty bizarre. Surely after being together for a year and a half, surely Michelle would have asked about Christo's parents.
Which I think unfortunately only leaves one option - that Christo has intentionally avoided talking about it.
And oh boy. While I do think Michelle has the right to be upset, going off at your partner because they didn't tell you that one of their parents was dead? Yeah. That'd go down great. Here's to hoping Michelle keeps her cool when she askes Christo about this.
Since the relationship between Christo and Michelle has been volatile at best, I'm not too surprised that he hasn't brought up his family with her. After all, Michelle's always been secretive about her own past AND she kept her stripper gig from him... I wouldn't exactly feel enthused to bring up my family with someone who plays hide and seek with theirs, to be honest.
with Jeffko. Why WOULD they talk about it? It's not really a subject either one of them would bring up and I don't think he intentionally hid it. That kind of thing is really difficult to talk about, and it's not as if they have the most supportive of relationships anyway.
the big issue is, this makes Christo a hypocrite - what with his freaking out about Michelle keeping her dancing a secret from him. I have a feeling that, above all else, Michelle doesn't tolerate hypocrites very well...
Now that's a surprise. About Christo's heritage. Not that Michelle didn't know. It has been shown that Michelle doesn't always pay attention to what Christo says (he told her about going to Spain for winter, and when he brought it up again, she didn't remember). He also asked her to meet his family for Christmas, and she denied. If someone isn't that interested in your family, you probably don't feel like sharing painful memories about it to them.
@cals1607: maybe. but it doesn't make it any better that it seems to be common knowledge for people who aren't his 'significant other'. or that those people assumed Michelle might have already known about it. only pages will tell :)
What. Huh? Would you really date someone for 18 months and not ever think to ask about their parents? Just because we've seen Michelle and Christo's relationship have ups and downs... it's been 18 months. It's not as if its been violently unstable for the entire 18 months.
I find it really hard to believe Michelle would have *never* asked, or said anything, where the natural response from Christo would be "Oh, my mother's dead".
I get the feeling this isn't a bad reflection on Christo, or even an indiciation that Christo is uncomfortable talking about it. Instead, I think this goes to show Michelle's disinterest of a serious relationship with Christo. If Michelle has honestly never asked Christo about his parents, it surely indicates that she has next to no interest in being involved with his family. Which... is a bad sign for a long term relationship.
@Barb: Either she has next to no interest in being involved with his family.
She is an intimately private person who doesn't feel comfortable prying into someone else's private life, even someone she's dating. It can be difficult for private people with a well-developed sense of independence to avoid doing things that would otherwise seem normal just because they want to respect their partner's privacy and not cross any lines.
Even if we guess that only 1/3 of the time that Christo and Michelle were having issues, picking up where you left off in terms of progressing the relationship can get relegated to a space of lesser importance behind normalcy and stability.
But it's not even about prying! As Peter just said - "That's crazy. They've been together for a year and a half and THAT never came up?" Surely people's parents are things that would just come up in conversation within in 18 months. I'd personally have to vote that casually asking a partner about their parents is polite, not prying.
Anyways. I'm sure it'll become clear if it's Michelle's fault this never came up, Christo's, or a bit of both.
While it is indeed odd that a relationship that has lasted over a year brought no mention of family, it wasn't from lack of trying on Christo's part. He actually invited Michelle to Europe to meet the folks and she turned him down. Now, her decision could be based on a great many things. Perhaps she felt bad about keeping her stripper gig from him and didn't feel comfortable opening herself up to his nearest and dearest before that was somehow resolved. Perhaps her own (possible and, IMO, very likely) family issues make her stand-offish when it comes to other people's family...
Personally, I think Christo wanted to tell her about his mom at some point, but got the vibe she either wouldn't care (since she didn't seem at all interested in meeting her family) or would be uncomfortable about it. For my part, I don't think that was wise, as losing a parent is a traumatic experience and seeking emotional support from a loved one is both natural and healthy. However, this relationship's ups and downs, as well as the unique personality of its members, make such behaviour possible.
I don't think Michelle is pissed at Christo... just disappointed and sad. Perhaps she believes she's created emotional distance between them that led to this. Perhaps she thinks he's not really over her lying to him about the stripper gig. Lots of possibilities there.
The only one that noticed an Alexander look-alike in this one? Fourth panel, next to a gal with some sweet pink hair lol. Looks like him if he had some scruff going for him. (Has his eyes and striped shirt.) I could be going senile...early. :D
Also, hi :D I stalk this comic and am way too shy for my own good. I will now go back into hiding. :3 *runs into burrow*
