It seems like every time I start a new book of Pictures of You, I'm surprised that it's happening, and Road Notes is no different, but this time it feels like I've come full circle. Let me tell you why.
You see, back in the spring of 2000 when the very first inklings of this story started forming in my head, the story began in what now exists as Book Four. The series began with the group formed, the history (or a version of it) that was the first three books had already happened, and the plot went from there.
Of course, it didn't take long to realize that without what came before, we wouldn't care as much about the characters. We needed to see the group come together, to watch the relationships form and fray a little. Most of you know what happened next, years of rewrites, different versions of the comic, then eventually the comic you've read.
Naturally, the version you're about to see is much different from the original ideas. For one, Peter played trumpet rather than keyboard, and for another, he and Kara were not together. Most significantly, perhaps, there was no One-Inch Punch, no band of any kind, and their part in this story didn't happen. Instead, there was a storyline about an old condemned hospital being torn down. It wasn't very good.
Perhaps strangely to many of you, the skeleton of the story that remains from the original version of this book involved Lauren and Sam, who you will see come into the forefront in perhaps unexpected ways. Trust me, you'll see, it's kinda crazy.
Now, Book Four begins, and it will be a far cry from the roller coaster that was Bishop Street. You're about to read a return to the for the most part lighter side of Pictures of You. That said, I think the complexity of the relationships will still be in form, and there will be a few moments of holyshitness.
So thanks to everyone who has stuck with us through the years and everyone who is new to the story. I hope you enjoy what's about to happen.
Don't forget, today is the 5th anniversary of Pictures of You online, and we're having a live video Q&A as part of this weekend's WEBReeF 2012 event. We're scheduled to go live at 3pm EST, 8pm GMT. Apologies to everyone on the other side of the planet, but any nighthawks among you, come along!
Go to http://www.webreef.net and sign up before the event in order to participate, and get your questions ready, or just come for the talking. Hope to see you there!
Ahhh, Book 4! It's hard to believe 2 months have already gone by. Finally, my weeks can be a little brighter with PoY updating regularly.
