Sorry for all the false starts this morning. Technical difficulties have continued to plague me the past couple weeks.
But good news!
The votes are in and Pictures of You has squeaked out a 15-vote win in the NSFW Webcomic Tournament's second round! Huzzah! And as promised, there will be an extra page updated to say thanks to everyone who busted out the votes!
While I did say that the extra update would come this week, that is proving untenable due to the aforementioned technical problems. Plus, at this point the pages would be rushed and probably late anyway. Instead, we'll be posting the extra page next week in a rare Mon-Tues-Thurs-Fri update schedule.
And hey, if we make it through this round, what the hell, TWO extra pages! And I'll say it now, because there isn't a hope in hell of it happening, if we win the tournament, I'll increase the regular update schedule to four pages a week. Go on, I dare you.
Now, there were also 115 votes bought for us. While I am thankful for the big gesture of support there, I need to urge everyone PLEASE DO NOT BUY VOTES! I will explain why.
In the second round, there was a last-minute 1000-vote buy for a single comic that bridged a very, very deep deficit to swing the bracket in their favour. It went to a comic whose victory was bought in the first round as well. Let me be clear, these purchased wins knocked out two very popular comics with devoted readerships, and would not have happened without those votes being bought. While it may seem to some as a sign that the comic has very devoted fans itself, and I'm sure that's true, it ends up making the comic's win look undeserved, which reflects poorly on that comic.
A simple analogy, think about a rich kid whose parents bribe them a spot on a sports team. Doesn't matter how good the kid can play, their place on the team wasn't earned, someone who did earn their place is going home, and the rest of the team is going to feel like the kid doesn't belong.
The only reason I give a shit about this or any other tournament is exposure. As long as we're overcoming other, more established and popular comics, the better it looks on us. It sends the message that this comic has something going for it, people are more likely to check it out. If our victory is bought, it sends the message that the only way it can win is to buy it.
Again, the support is huge and appreciated, I love you folks, but please refrain from buying votes in the future. If you really want to give that money to help promote Pictures of You, donate it directly to us and we'll spend it on advertising, or you can send it directly to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a really worthy cause.
I'm still waiting for the update.I wanted to say that I've been reading Roomie forever. It's quite funny, but after having read everything on Pictures (just this past weekend) I still, honestly and full-heartedly, give the vote to you. You definitely made a favorite read for me, and I hope you go through against some of my other favorites. Good luck
I know you will be real disappointed in me Gibson, but I caved in a bought about 5 votes *hangs head in shame*. I think that was before I read about why you didn't want to buy votes, and I may have been drunk at the time, but I felt stupid for the next week!
Not buying any more votes though, as I can completely see why it's unhelpful. Especially given that the rush I got from seeing PoY won fair and square before any added money-votes was huge. Best of luck for the next round!
Ominous! Michelle looks like she's going to open up a little bit here. I hope so. She's definitely one of those characters who's grown on me a lot since the beginning (when I thought she was an unmitigated BITCH).
