You know, for the bad opinion Patrick has of her, Kara usually comes around rather likable. The more surprising she hangs around with the Devon crowd. Her self-confidence is high enough to choose better company.
Hey, so far Peter has yet to knock a single tooth out of a jaw (that we know of).
More seriously, Melanie's face in the first panel says it all. Yes, she knows that Devon's "I'm a jerk because they all pick on me" is a sham, as evidenced here. I keep hoping that Devon will go too far, but short of eating kittens alive with mustard I can't see what would work.
Not that Kara helps. I normally root for anyone who keeps arguments quiet (which she does with splendid class), but it stifles the conflict that might need to explode for Melanie's sake.
I think the worst Patrick could do would be to take a swing at Devon. That would definitely open a gap between him and Melanie. I think he knows it, too.
(Oh, and Dormitator: Kara may just have chosen to hang out with Melanie out of friendship, accepting to suffer Devon and Nelson - in which a few jabs here and there seem to help. "Everyone's Mexican." Very funny. Still, Alexander doesn't seem too smart either. Come on, to mistake a Spaniard for a Greek ...
Yeah, I was rather surprised that of all people in that group, Kara is there. Also, agreeing with Dormitator, I have taken a liking to her character lately.
What gets me the most is how the big asswipe Devon complains about how hard he has it because of Patrick and the guys yet him and his space-cadet sidekick chastise him unprovoked right in front of Melanie... Pity chasing son of a... Hope he gets what he deserves.
Kinda funny, how much credit Devon is given. I doubt he thinks he has Melanie under his thumb; I've met folks like him -- hell, I WAS like him at one point, and argh is right, sooner it's beat out of him the better -- and the problem is that he DOESN'T think. He acts on impulse, and people are either mirrors that reflect what he wishes to see, or toys to play with until they break. And there's no guarantee that a beating won't reinforce the childish outlook in some way.
Well, Mr Twist. It is interesting to see how the nasty little creep only feels able to stand up when he has HIS entourage around him. I suppose he feels manful enough hit women all on his pathetic little ownsome, but only feels safe enough to potentially start something when he has his cronies around him when it is another man he is talking to. Such a shame Melanie won't speak up. Sympathy for her, yes, respect, no. MM
