Bring on the PAIN!
Man, I knew it. I said it was gonna happen. It is happening and I am as giddy as a school girl. I said it once and I'll say it again, "That boy doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of surviving that encounter when the boys get a hold of em."
Mr Twist, Sir, I have to report a technical problem.
I do not seem to be able to find the link where we can send in our online testimony to the Canadian Police. Because Peter was at my place the whole night. We drank tea and discussed economics. I swear.
Oh, boy. As refreshing as the view is, Peter has probably put himself in a bad position concerning the law, not only attacking Devon but breaking in.
And violence is not a mature response, kids.
That being said: SMASH HIS FUCKING FACE!!
Great page as usual. That may be a minor point, but I do like how your comic goes through the pain to have the characters have changes of clothes during the time.
Can somebody help me with what Dickhead McDeadNow is murmuring? I could decipher it up to "right after"; zooming in makes the text too blurry.
jd_singer, as for some reason my comment on the last comic didn't appear, here again: I'm sitting in North Germany. You are from France, if I recall correctly?
*sits back with her popcorn* It's always satisfying to see an antagonist get the beat down we all know has been coming to him. I hope Peter pulls a Fight Club moment and destroys his face till Devin is unrecognizable.
I think I'm just echoing all the comments when I say that I've been waiting a long time for this. I agree with everyone that Devon deserves to get his ass royally owned, but I don't think that even if Slugger could hear us, that he'd be able to 'hear' us. Right now, he's seeing red, and woe to anyone and anything in his way, including the door.
And I agree with NicoleW. If there was a print of that comic, or even the last panel, I'd buy one to hang on my wall.
He's possibly looking at Illegal Entry / Trespassing and Assault (to what degree we'll find out on monday . . . maybe Wednesday if Mr Twist allows us to savour it) but that's only if it get's reported. If it goes through the cops, Devon's history of violence to mel will come out and that'll only serve as justification for Peter's action. Not a jury in the world and all that.
Hats off to you Mr. Twist. That last panel is Epic.
Yes, we have been waiting for this for a while. Sadly, this is the sort of thing that will tug on Melanie's heart and bring her back to Devon. And the sort of thing that is likely to make Devon more abusive. Abusers are tied into status and being beaten by Peter to whom Devon feels superior will only make Devon need to abuse more.
I agree that this will probably not end well for Peter (arrested, etc.), and it definitely will not end well for Douc... err Devon (beaten within an inch of his life, etc.). And I agree that abusers and their victims seem to always end up back with each other, but then I noticed the scratch. No one else has mentioned it yet. I take that to mean the Mel finally fought back... maybe, just maybe, she's figured out how bad he really is. *crosses fingers*
Oh my God you just made my Friday. Seriously. THANK you. Now I hope Peter doesn't kill him (and solely for the legal ramifications), but I do hope he makes the paramedics work HARD for their money when they arrive=)
I still feel like this will hurt more than help in the end.
Edit: I don't think Mel will go back. Not after how she acted after the first time he hit her. She was upset and angry and he apologized and talked her down and she went along with it, though unhappily.
But I somewhat think even she can't forgive this. If she was really planning on lying down and taking it, she wouldn't have gone to Peter's. A common case abuse victim will just cower somewhere like a bathroom or somewhere and then lie about the cuts and bruises to friends and family.
We are allowed to have guns - I've got 2 - however most people don't own hand guns. There's a whole day's worth of training you have to do to get a restricted weapons license. Besides, given the low levels of violent crime, we don't actually NEED handguns
Yay and oh no
I've been reading your comic for a long time now and I must say I have mixed emotions about this. On the one hand Devon is about to receive the beating he so richly deserves at Peter's hands, on the other If Melanie sees the aftermath of the beating Peter gives Devon it could trigger her return to him, so yaaaaaaaaaayboooooooo
I know most people think it's bad to get into trouble with the police and end up in jail, but if someone I care about was in Mel position, I would end up arrested for sure, but I would have enjoyed it.
(As far as we know, beating up on Melanie isn't regular enough to qualify as a hobby, thank God.)
Panel 2 reminded me of that morning where I was busily taking care of my little daughter and someone knocked on the door, then banged while I was wiping my hands dry, then banged even louder while I was hanging up the towel and it turned out to be the police. (They weren't there for something I had done, but giving more details is too long a story for here and not my story anyway.) It would have been nice if it could have been the cops banging at Devon's door.
Oh, and I counted eight "fuck" in three panels. Does it make him a little cooler? (Or is it just too much?)
Last panel ... reidavidson, you weren't the only one but you sure beat me to it. (Then again, driving 100 km to shop for furniture and back, then having a band rehearsal does nothing to help one read, let alone comment PoY.)
I thought of making that last panel into a T-shirt too (there are quite a few single-panel pages I'd like to do this with: "I'd say this is the start of a horrible friendship", "Let's rock and roll - Sweet potato fuck!", and of course "Okay boys ... LET'S ROCK!"), but on second thoughts Devon's face looks too nice in it; his nose even looks normal. Maybe with something like "COME IN" above and "make yourself UNCOMFORTABLE" below, it would still make something nice.
And of course, after a longer look at the last panel, I had to scroll up and watch the previous ones closer. The scratch marks are, to me, the biggest point that Melanie's through with that relationship, and good riddance.
Now, if and when Peter beats the hell out of Devon (which, though richly deserved, I find myself unable to condone), I just hope they find some time to talk and get Devon a little more depth, maybe along the lines of my theory on a secret love between Melanie and Andy from last page.
I mean, most of the characters so far have gotten beyond the surface personality they initially displayed:
Peter is more than a clueless hick with a violent streak.
Christo is tender underneath his Mad Spanish Fly spiel.
Michelle shows thoughtfulness towards Melanie, contradicting her angry, malcontent punk routine.
Andy's happy-go-lucky man-whore persona hides the voice of reason he has been speaking lately.
Lauren is growing into more than the perfect daughter she used to be.
Mulligan has interestingly sorted moral priorities.
Sam is a nerd. (And Michelle and Christo suspect something about him, but it doesn't count yet. Come to think of it, neither does being a nerd, much.)
Kara cares for people behind her carefree facade.
Melanie won't be a victim any more.
Patrick ... All right, so Patrick and Sam still have to exhibit significant change. (Patrick isn't a complete grouch, but he has never been shown to.)
Still, it would be nice if the main antagonists were slightly more complex too. I think a writer of the caliber you have exhibited so far, Mr. Twist, can easily pull it off. (Hey, if I could dream something up, not only can you, but better.)
Kerlyssa: small patches of hair sometimes look darker. And Devon is hazelnut anyway, so dark body hair wouldn't be out of the ordinary.
Dormitator: danke schön für die Antwort. Ich habe dasselbe Schwierigkeiten gehabt. Vielleicht die Website bearbeitet zu lange Gerede fehlerhaft? (To anyone who thinks I can speak German: I think you can't.)
XenoVega: that's even worse, because most gods give at least a little leeway to their creatures, while a writer controls every little facet of his or her characters' actions, thoughts and feelings. (More or less - various writers report that characters occasionnally will be written that way and not another, despite initial intent. Mr. Twist himself reported, in the beginning, having to refrain from making the comic about Michelle and a bunch of other people.)
Thank you for this page, Mr. Twist, and enjoy the coming ones. It seems you should.
Awww, poor Devon.... (NOT!!!)
gggggooooooOOOOOOOOO PETER!!! Can't say I'm feeling too sorry for McMaster-bater. Maybe Peter will have time to carve a little ol' One Inch Punch tattoo on McDork. Like, on his face....
(by the way, I don't like to critizice, specially this comic coz I really love it, but this devon character has been always a little exagereted to me. I mean, can anyone be so much of an asshole? Sometimes I feel it's just excesive)
"but this devon character has been always a little exagereted to me. I mean, can anyone be so much of an asshole? Sometimes I feel it's just excesive"
The few (yes, I've come across THAT many) that I've seen have been very similar to this. I see this guy as an amalgam of these guys I've come across. There always seemed to be 'something' wrong with them and I could never put my finger on it. Though Peter (who's eyes most of this comic seems to be seen through), didn't really know why this guy was such a douche until Patrick told him about the abusiveness.
Replying to Lee and Twist, yeah, we have guns, and I know Canada allows them too. I also advocate for every household having at least one, just in case, but in this situation, Lee's right, they're not needed. Not that I believe that Peter is actually angry enough to use it, but getting shot just seems too good for Devon.
Coming back to this comic after about three years of not reading it and seeing this page for the first time, I kinda just threw my hands up into the air and shouted "fuck yeah!" and woke up my roommates. Needed to be done.
