Gibson Twist, June 1st, 2010, 10:57 pm

So this month marks a year since Bishop Street began, and more than a year that PoY has floated around in the Top 20 over on WebcomicZ, and I'm going to try something a little different in hopes to bump up the ranking on Top Web Comics. Each week, I'm going to offer an incentive image for voting for us there. This first week, I'm offering a Pictures of You desktop that until now was only available as a thank you to those who made financial donations (I'm offering donators a newer, more Bishop Street themed desktop now, in case anyone was wondering!)

And hey, even if you don't want the desktop, I'll love you forever if you vote for us anyway!

Yay Gibson!

Kotire, June 2nd, 2010, 12:10 am

Incentive not needed. I will indeed vote. MY VOICE WILL BE HEARD!!

Roderigo (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 12:21 am

So the alternating panel is Andy telling Patrick the bad news? interested to see how he takes it

LeyLegbreaker, June 2nd, 2010, 2:16 am

Wow, already a year?
-Awesome Comic, love the shadows expressing it all. And nice to read the background of Michelle and Devon. It answers a few of my former questions quite perfectly :).
-Goes to vote nao ^_^

yayness (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 2:56 am

omgjsfkomg they way you did the panels here is AMAZING. So powerful, it feels like a movie playing out. God poor Mel, she looks awful :( Somehow seeing her face still healing really makes me pleased Peter did the smackdown on Devon, although poor guys probably still suffering for it.

Woo yeah I knew that was Alexander! And redshirt was Andy, I think for some weird reason I thought Patrick's hair was shorter.

Trisscar (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 5:07 am

I'm finding it a bit strange that Alex isn't responding to this news at all. Sure, his face might be displaying shock for all I know, but as far as I can tell he's just sitting there, in the exact same position all the time.

SuperBiasedMan, June 2nd, 2010, 6:17 am

@Trisscar: Yes, but it is Alex. He was deadpan back when Melanie mentioned breaking up with Devon. Expecting him to leap out of his chair isn't exactly likely considering.

xkrazydog, June 2nd, 2010, 6:26 am

Mel u are his bitch 8|. Now you can be Andy's bitch 8D.

darkamnios, June 2nd, 2010, 6:56 am

Still finding the fact that she "blamed" one of Devon's "fits" on Patrick makes me uneasy..
Excellent way to display whats going on, rather than just having the shadows as a strip by itself...
Bravo, as always Mr. Twist.

And go go Voting people!!

Erin (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 7:03 am

It's no less than 75 degrees outside and I'm cold now. I can't imagine the amount of research that went into writing this so accurately.

Laura (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 8:15 am

Yeah man, that is so appropiate :/.

On a side note, it's awful that she blames her brother. And the panel with the three girls in it, so so good. Reminds me of a similar case in which none of us knew what the hell to say to our friends' story.

Awesome, Mr Twist!

TattooFox (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 9:39 am

If you take what she says about Patrick in context with the other "reasons" Devon gave for hitting her, I don't think she IS blaming it on him, at all. I think it was meant as a statement. Correct me if I'm wrong, Mr. Twist. but it seems that way to me. Note how she pauses (implied by the comma), and probably again after the "but", as most people tend to do that.

Is that Lauren? Havent seen her in a while, just wanted to check.

Having, unfortunately, been in the position of Kara and Michelle, I know how it is. You hear about something awful that a friend has been put through by someone who supposedly loves them, and what do you say? In Mel's case, she's already gotten away from him, so they can't urge her to leave. At this point, there's naught to do but listen and try to be respectful of her feelings. Thankfully, the friend for whom I was a sounding board got herself out before her ex did to her what Devon did to Mel. But its still scary to know someone you care about is going through that.

Excellent work with the panels of the cafe. I assume Patrick is running to Mel. And Alexander, he seems to be a bit jaded when it comes to these things, so he's probably going to sit there and finish whatever he was eating and THEN follow. Andy looks so... resigned. The way his shoulders are held before he walks in, like hes squaring himself up for something bad. Which, I suppose he's expecting the worst reaction from Patrick.

Eagerly awaiting the next update.

I concur, this page is another shining example of the highness your art is reaching, Mr. Twist. Beautifully scripted and compellingly drawn.

I also notice that Michelle has gone from the character you had to refrain from putting too much in the spotlight to a remarkably subdued one when necessary. (Of course, her last focus scene around http://picturesofyou.smackjeeves.com/comics/836535/3-ii-04-dancing-queen-23/ was great as always.)

yayness: Patrick's hair used to be shorter indeed, until sleeping with Alexander activated his mutant power of making his hair grow longer after sex. (Actually, I checked and it was on the page you first commented on, if I understand correctly your comment that you had just read through the whole story.)

A Super Ninja: I wouldn't put it past Patrick to get in Devon's apartment (the door being still broken), see Devon sprawled in pain and still put in a kick to the stomach or a slap to the face, depending on Devon's situation. But I'd like to believe his first priority will be to go and see Melissa. It's his chance to prove that "[he's] just looking out for [her] is all" as he said (quoted from memory, I don't get the pages from where I'm posting right now) in http://picturesofyou.smackjeeves.com/comics/858799/3-ii-05-run-and-hide-4/ .

xkrazydog: are you trying to make enemies?

TattooFox: I seemed to remember, too, that Melanie didn't so much blame Patrick as present Devon's point of view.

About Lauren (if that's her indeed, but who else?), seems she has lighter brown hair now. Has she been dyeing? After getting a shorter hairdo and a tattoo, to what new depravities will she sink next?

Interesting how you assume Patrick is going to comfort Mel and cals1607 assumes he's going to beat up on Devon. I'd say his silhouette bespeaks more anger than sadness, but maybe it's just agitation and distress.

And I must admit to my enduring shame that I have not been voting in a long time. I, who am the first to react on political subjects. LET'S MAKE OUR VOICE HEARD, CITIZENS OF YOU!

TCGC (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 10:51 am

"About Lauren (if that's her indeed, but who else?), seems she has lighter brown hair now. Has she been dyeing? After getting a shorter hairdo and a tattoo, to what new depravities will she sink next?"

Depravities? That hardly seems fair at all. I don't recall the time when changing my hair and getting a tattoo sleeve suddenly corrupted my morality, or counted as a depraved act at the very least.

Gibson Twist, June 2nd, 2010, 11:02 am

Erin, sadly, no research at all went into this, it's drawn entirely from people I've known and things I've heard them say. I wish I could say it was based on one person, but the truth is it's been many.

TattooFox, you are correct, that is how I intended it. And yes, that is Lauren.

KrazyD, you so krazy.

Everyone else, thanks for the kind words and thanks for voting!

Shikamaru_Nara, June 2nd, 2010, 12:18 pm

I'll say it again. That is the best road ever. I don't even know why I find that strip of thoroughfare so intriguing, but something about the way you draw it revives precious childhood memories or something Freudian, but I don't want to know how I would connect that road to sexual urges in my mind's eye. I supposed it gets used, there are both one-way and two-way roads...and rocky roads. I never really understood why they called rocky road ice cream rocky road ice cream. I get that it has nuts and such, but I never got a very road-like feel out of it. Nor do I really know of a road that is rocky. They usually block those things off and fix them after a roadslide. It'd be kinda fun to drive through one actually. Like flying the Millenium Falcon through an asteroid belt.

<3 roads <3

reidavidson, June 2nd, 2010, 2:38 pm

I feel like my friend is Melanie with a boy who used to be sweet but gets worse all the time and lies and cheats but she keeps going back to him. I guess nothing really stops it from getting this far, where Mel is now. Because right now I'm a lot like Patrick, antagonizing the situation and telling her he's a loser, which only seems to make it worse. :(

Gibson Twist, June 2nd, 2010, 2:53 pm

I have seen it happen that someone who was treading down the path to abuse has been turned around and became a really great guy. I wish I knew how it happened or what was said, but it has happened.

In a small defense of my gender, too, I've not only known many women to be paranoid, controlling and physically and mentally abusive, but I've dated one or two.

djcnoieidcn (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 3:37 pm

It's just so sad that some guys find a woman who love them so much they will put up with preposterous ammount of shit and some other guys give their all for a girl and only get back the old 'I don't feel that way about you'.

youngcannibals, June 2nd, 2010, 3:51 pm

My ex-wife was a terrible person, and I was blind not to see it before we tied the knot. Sometimes love is blind, deaf and dumb.

Pretentious Artsy Douchebag, June 2nd, 2010, 4:32 pm

Sh¡t! great page!

jd_singer, June 2nd, 2010, 5:37 pm

Alright, I've done my civic duty. Except I can't find where to vote on Comic Rank; I don't even think it has to do with voting. (Yeah, I'm such a noob.)

TCGC, I'm sorry - I just realized the batteries for my irony transmitter are shot. That comment was meant as a joke about how Lauren has changed since we first met her.

Mr. Twist, based on that John D. MacDonald foreword for a Stephen King short story collection I read decades ago, that counts as research. And I suspect Erin meant it as such.

reidavidson, my deep sympathy. Maybe you could slightly change your tack and focus on what the guy does rather than what he is - people in love with someone see him or her a wholly different person than the rest of the world. (A bit like what Kara and Michelle did to Melanie in "A Wise Investment" and "Tattoo You", viz. http://picturesofyou.smackjeeves.com/comics/703560/3-i-04-a-wise-investment-4/ and http://picturesofyou.smackjeeves.com/comics/753712/3-ii-02-tattoo-you-9/ .) But that demands a lot of tact and verbal dexterity (not implying you don't have those, just not knowing if you do), so you might just want to sit her face to face and strongly state that no matter what, she's your friend and you'll be by her side, ready to lend a shoulder to cry or lean on, ready to listen to her grief or joy, ready to give her love whenever needed.

That doesn't seem like much, but it's a start and furthermore doesn't give Devon the excuse that you're antagonizing him.

djcnoleidcn: sad indeed. Then again, the second category sooner or later find one who does feel that way. They just have to remember their dreams don't necessarily come true as expected.

Once again, this page was a great one in a story full of great pages.

teh_nothing, June 2nd, 2010, 5:57 pm

Here's hoping the boys tone down Bishop street for a while. It would be great if Devon had the fear of god beat into him, but a petty little dude like that is just as likely to go to the cops and tell them the druggies in that house beat him up. I've seen first hand what this kind of drama can stir up, and assault plus drug charges could be a bad thing for all involved.

Yazzydream, June 2nd, 2010, 10:07 pm

voted yesterday and today. Woo! POY is shooting up there! :D

Redcrow (Guest), June 2nd, 2010, 10:58 pm

In the West, especially English-speaking countries, we are all hung-up on talking.

There is nothing you can say to someone in Melanie's situation. It's her turn to do all the talking. Everybody else had their say before the beating happened. It's time to listen.

dangerface, June 3rd, 2010, 4:45 pm

Love the way these two pages are set up. Great stuff, man!

xkrazydog, June 6th, 2010, 12:26 am

hahaha 8| I forgot it was illegal to comment on a comic unless its a DEEP PHILOSOPHICAL DEBATE OF MORAL IMPORTANCE. Nice job guys for sucking fun out of reading webcomics for leisure.

1. Melanie is actually a character i like sorry to disappoint you guys that i'm not in fact a douchebag.
2. She was Devon's bitch. I think that was established since she was in an extended relationship with an abusive boyfriend, and was submissive about it till now.

now here's my EPIC ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION: If she did INDEED date Andy (as reference to what Devon pointed out before), he obviously wont treat her like a fling since this isnt some faceless pair of tits walking his way but a friend. And two, who knows if he's even ready for a committed relationship at all anyway.

Also, sorry to burst everyone's pity "melanie will be okay now" bubble but people dont get over their abusive tendencies or their abuse'd submissive tendencies in a heartbeat. If she does have another relationship (whether its a jump boat one or a healing one) it'll be a slow process and if she was realistic, feelings of inferiority and submission will still be visible. (i.e if she did date andy she would be his bitch even if Andy didnt want to) confidence hurts like that. Therefore my crude, joking sarcastic comment isn't totally Right field.

everyone, chill out. And if you're gonna call me immature and omg your an enemy! your messed up! then get out in the real world because cynical sarcastic assholes exist in the world.

Gibson Twist, June 6th, 2010, 12:34 am

For what it's worth, Krazy D, your first comment made me smile.

xkrazydog, June 6th, 2010, 5:47 am

8| S'ok Twist, 'tis true I am Krazy.
This was a response to the others.
